Often there is more than one eCommunity for a single topic on the internet. For many readers, the first inclination is to think that duplicated efforts to build a cohesive eCommunity are an error and that the competing entities should work together to create a single resource. This is particularly true for topics like a rare medical condition which may be of interest to only a few people. It is our experience that in those cases, there is no clear-cut response. In some examples we have noticed that the patient and caregiver community didn't want to have multiple sources of information and support; while in other examples involving rare forms of cancer, two or even more eCommunities are thriving after competing for years for members that come from the same pool of interested people. In those cases, interested members join all the possible forums to make sure they never miss any information that may impact their lives.
